It is clear that the avataras are the various components and innervators of the cardio-respiratory apparatus. There are innervators pertaining to the various regions and divisions of the airways and each of these plays a vital role in sustaining the life of the jiva. It is these components whose "deeds" and "activities" are celebrated through prayer and song as the tale of the descents (avatara) of the Lord. For, these components are created and animated by the Lord. The Lord has descended, as it were, in the form of these entities to protect and preserve this (micro) universe. Matsya seems to be, therefore, the innervating entity in charge of the pulmonary arterial flow; while kurma is undoubtedly the bronchial tortoise.
Kurma, in the context of our microcosmic model - which is at once used to highlight some general truths regarding the macrocosm –, is the great support of all and may also be said, more precisely, to stand for the innervator of the primary bronchus of the human respiratory system.
